The natural starting point: at the centre of the square, the lava-basalt elephant locals call «Liotru», a symbol of the city since 1736.

Cathedral of Sant'Agata
Rebuilt in baroque style after the 1693 earthquake. Home to the relics of the city's patron saint and the tomb of Vincenzo Bellini.

Fed by the underground Amenano river, it forms a small waterfall at the foot of the Pescheria steps: one of Catania's most photographed spots.

Morning is best
Starting early lets you see the Pescheria market in full swing (it closes around 13:00) and avoid the heat in summer months.

Comfortable shoes
The old town is paved with lava basalt: beautiful to look at, but slippery and uneven. Comfortable shoes are a good idea, especially after rain.

Exception: Feb 3-5
During the Feast of Sant'Agata the old town is closed to traffic and very crowded: a unique experience, but worth planning around if visiting on those dates.
